The 2008 comeback of the pop princess, Britney Spears continues. Her latest album, Circus, debuted at the top of the charts this week selling just under 505,100 copies. This is her fifth album to debut in the #1 spot and sold almost TWICE as many as last year’s Blackout. Blackout was her only album not to debut at the top. Even with these outstanding numbers Brit wasn’t close to being the biggest debut of the year, she managed to only be the sixth highest. She did beat out Beyonce, Mariah Carey and pop star Miley Cyrus.

Jive Records released a statement on this news, “We’re absolutely thrilled for Britney. The response to Circus is a testament to how great the album is, and to how connected and supportive Britney’s fans are to her and her music.”

So what about the rest of the charts? Taylor Swift remained strong with her album Fearless, keeping the second spot. Beyonce dropped from the top spot all the way to the third. Beyonce knocked Swift out of the top spot just two weeks ago, but Taylor is already back to leading. Could it be that even with her stardom and talent she doesn’t have the fan base that a Britney or Taylor have?  Last week’s champ Kanye West dropped all the way to fourth, which is no surprise for a rap album.

There were a few new releases this week as well. Akon came out with Freedom, which came in at the seventh spot selling approximately 110,600 copies. The soundtrack for Beyonce’s new movie “Cadillac Records” dropped as well, but could only muster 15,600 sales, and debuted at #66.

Here is the official top 10.

  1. Britney Spears - Circus - 505,100
  2. Taylor Swift - Fearless - 193,500
  3. Beyonce - I Am…Sasha Fierce - 152,800
  4. Kanye West - 808s & Heartbreak - 141,700
  5. Nickelback - Darkhorse - 133,400
  6. Twilight Soundrack
  7. Akon - Freedom - 110,600
  8. High School Musical 3 Soundtrack
  9. NOW! That’s What I Call Music 29
  10. David Cook - David Cook

That’s all for this week.  Congrats to Britney on her chart topper and continuing comeback.  Next up for the pop princess is the Circus Tour, which is currently the most anticipated World Tour for 2009.
